GMF heal the world
Deepest condolences to those of you who have not yet heard of Grand Mother’s Funck!
For more than 15 years this great band has provided some of the hottest party music on the planet! From the moment they fire up, even the most resolute of the “just playin’ it cool” gang will leave their cosy corner behind and start moving! It’s true.
On GMF’s new album „The Proud Egyptian“, next to Rich Fonje’s smooth and soulful vocals, you’ll find a delightful surprise, a proper ear-catcher: the quintessential rapper Akil the MC. Ring a bell? No?... You still have a lot to learn about Funk and HipHop, son!
Fortunately, GMF have agreed to fill this gap in your education by way of their latest album. After having approached the true Master of Rhythm himself, Akil The MC, from legendary HipHop-crew Jurassic 5, one swift plane ride from L.A. to Switzerland later, the new GMF mold was set…
Worth noting is that Jurassic 5, along with Pharcyde and Souls of Mischief, have been a central influence for what is being called the „Laid Back Cali Style“ of Rap. Along with A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, they are a big name in the American Jazz-Rap scene.
Grand Mother’s Funck and Akil the MC are now reviving the vinyl culture of Funk, R&B and Soul and with their latest offering have stirred up a new brew of Old School beats and South Central rhymes. Far from gangster poses and cheap machismo, Akil raps eloquently about a positive attitude to life and his personal relation to music.
Those who know their way around the block will properly dig the musical package that is GMF’s new album „The Proud Egyptian“. The party-tracks „Your Thang“ and „Let the World Know“ sound like they’ve just been cooked in a chef DJ’s kitchen and delivered piping hot to your turntable. In beautiful contrast, smooth songs like „Wonder Why“ or „We Must Move Along“, present Rich Fonje’s consummate talent as a Soul singer. All of this is deftly supported by the exceptional musicianship of a truly extraordinary band. GMF skillfully paraphrase their influences, the same that originally shaped Funk and HipHop, and without a breath of plagiarism. In doing so, they have created both a unique and sophisticated album, and a funky collection of groovy party tracks.
And you know what? GMF don’t get on your nerves with dogmatic political suggestions and heal-the-world messages. The world heals itself – with good music!
